ESL for Adults

In April 2011, we began offering English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to the parents of our students.  Beyond the obvious reasons for parents to learn English is the secondary message it sends to their children—Education is important and essential.  Not only is English proficiency vital to thriving in this world but ongoing learning and study ethics are valuable habits to impart to all children.

This semester, we have 16 students enrolled in the 11-week ESL 1.  ESL 1 is an introductory course which emphasizes basic grammar and vocabulary.  In the classroom, adults acquire English language skills through speaking, reading, and writing exercises all geared to expand vocabulary and reinforce basic grammatical tenses.  We have a great emphasis on pronunciation and making connections with Spanish grammatical rules, so that the content is more comprehensible.  Some of the topics that our students will be learning this semester are: how to describe classroom objects, rooms in the home, cities, nationalities, and other people.  In addition, they will also be focusing on the grammar portion of the English language, including the present continuous tense, possessive adjectives, prepositions, and finally ending with the simple present.

We hope to offer additional classes for more parents and expand into advanced classes.
